“Ming Ong is an artist and graphic designer, based in Los Angeles, California. Her artwork reflects her international upbringing and inclusive worldview.
Her paintings often depict children and animals in disquieting situations, juxtaposing bright colors and nostalgic children’s book illustration with dark subject matter and serious themes.
Her influences include 50’s and 60’s American advertising, 80’s American cartoons, Chinese propaganda art, Japanese anime and pop characters, and Japanese children’s illustrations”
A friend recently sent me the link to this video of a bizarre toy…
Isn’t that a beautiful toy?! I’m sure the makers thought it would be a cute thing… a little fluffy kitty hiding in a milk churn aww… but even ignoring the stripped bare one – the twinkly music, the weird long tongue, strange mouth and staring eyes, the mechanical way it moves! Gah! This led to me searching for other similar beauties. Enjoy!
Toy makers… what were you thinking?

The Mastadon video gives a great glimpse into the process involved in making of one these pieces ( a piece that was featured on the band’s ‘The Hunter‘ album), where everything is handcrafted – not a laser cutter in sight!
May the fat man in the red suit bring you many Nose Goblins!

A treat for all you Coleopterists out there! (or people that collect and study beetles to you and me)
Wallace Collection beetle specimens at NHM
I’ve always liked those big cases full of insects in places like the Natural History Museum but I once looked up methods for preserving insects in this way and even though they are ‘only insects’ it kind of felt a little bit cruel to me – I can’t even kill spiders, even though they are hideous!
Anyway, no real living creatures were harmed in the making of these brilliant beetles by Felt Mistress. You can have a pinned and framed critter and a completely clear conscience… and real beetles don’t have such awesome boots either so these definitely win for me!
At the time of posting, these are available to buy here, but I imagine they won’t be around for too long!
I’ve posted about the work of Joe Fenton before – this time we can see him draw one of his incredible pieces from start to finish!
Some of my favourite custom vinyl toys are created by UK artist & illustrator Matthew Plater, aka MAp-MAp. His quirky collection of characters often have a cool little backstories to accompany them. I love seeing the designs at the just primed stage because it gives a great insight into how much painstaking sculpting goes on to create these customs and original pieces.

Above are my favourite 4 acrylic on wood paintings by Brooklyn based artist, illustrator and animator Kelly Denato. For some reason I’ve picked a lot of the dark coloured paintings, but you should check out her blog or Flickr photostream because her style is really varied – she also creates soft plush sculptures and custom vinyl toys and has a great selection of colourful character sketches too!
